TUCSON, Ariz. -- The Allegheny College baseball team was unable to take a game from Otterbein University on its spring break trip in Arizona, as the Cardinals won the series finale against the Gators, 12-5.
Allegheny (2-5) kept things close through the first two-thirds of the contest and took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. But after starter
Brent Herrmann (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) exited the mound, the Cardinals (8-2) pounced on the Gators' bullpen.
Chase Chodkowski (Buffalo, N.Y./West Seneca West) put the first batch of coal into the fire as he launched his first home run of the season over the right field fence in the bottom of the third to tie the game at 1-1. It was a no-doubt blast for the senior captain, who continues to swing a hot bat early in the season.
After falling behind 4-1, Allegheny gained steam, scoring once in the fourth and rallying for a four-run fifth to take a 5-4 lead.
Tyson Bryant-Dawson (Oakland, Calif./Manvel (Texas)) drove in the tying run with a sac fly, and an errant throw back toward the infield allowed
Brady Nolin (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) to score the go-ahead run from second on the play.
Herrmann provided 6.0 solid innings, allowing four runs on eight hits with two strikeouts. Despite his final stat line, he kept Otterbein's powerhouse offense in check, and his only significant blemish came when he gave up three runs in the fourth inning. Herrman left the game with a 5-4 Gator lead, but the birds took off when the bullpen was called to action.
No one after Herrmann threw more than two-thirds of an inning except
Dylan Fanelli (Berkeley, Calif./California High), who made his collegiate debut in the ninth. After coming in with runners on second and third, Fanelli walked the first batter, then rolled a pitcher's best friend, a double play. He finished the inning with a weak ground ball to record the final out and looked sharp while maneuvering around the heart of the Otterbein lineup.
