HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. -- For the second time in as many days, Allegheny College men's tennis captured a narrow 5-4 victory. This time, the Gators beat Gettysburg College by a single point in a Monday morning matchup at the Chaplin Park Tennis Center in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.
The Gators (5-3) began the match with only one doubles point, which gave the Bullets (0-2) an early leg-up. And withÂ
Guillaume Emiliano Loinard-Gonzalez (Morelia, Michoacan, Mexico/Universidad Jefferson Morelia) retiring in the second set of his match, that meant Allegheny needed to win four of the five remaining singles matches to clinch the win.
Of the four singles wins the Gators earned, only one did not go to a 10-point tiebreaker, as
Anton Hedlund (Hovas, Sweden/Katrinelundsgymnasiet) took down Michael Fellman, 6-4, 7-5, atop the lineup.
Adam Shinomiya (Portland, Ore./International School of Beaverton) and
Julien Voisey (Tokyo, Japan/ES International School) both needed to overcome first-set losses and defeated their opponents, 10-8, in their tiebreakers.
Evan Nelson (Scituate, Mass./Scituate), representing the match-winning point, also toughed out a 10-8 tiebreak win at No. 5 singles.
