Men's Tennis Splits 5-4 Decisions to Start Spring Break

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. -- The Allegheny College men's tennis team began its week-long stay in beautiful Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, by splitting a pair of 5-4 decisions on Sunday.

In the morning, the Gators (4-3) edged Eastern Nazarene College (3-3) at the Chaplin Park Tennis Center but were defeated by Drew University at the Hilton Head Resort in their afternoon match.

The Blue and Gold took a 2-1 lead with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. The duo of Anton Hedlund (Hovas, Sweden/Katrinelundsgymnasiet) and Adam Shinomiya (Portland, Ore./International School of Beaverton) cruised to an 8-1 victory at the top spot, whereas David Rodriguez (St. Ann's, Trinidad and Tobago/Fatima College) and Julien Voisey (Tokyo, Japan/ES International School) played to a much closer 8-6 score.

Hedlund and Shinomiya claimed their matches at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, too, with Shinomiya bouncing back from a tiebreak loss in the opening set to win, 6-7 (2-7), 6-0, 1-0 (10-6).
