Kusinsky Shines as Baseball Splits Sunday Meetings vs. Bethany Lutheran, Otterbein

TUCSON, Arizona -- The Allegheny College baseball team split a twin bill on Sunday, as the Gators won the first game of the day versus Bethany Lutheran College, 3-1, and lost the second game to the Cardinals of Otterbein University, 12-2.

Allegheny 3, Bethany Lutheran 1
The Gators (2-4) looked sharp after the game was delayed for almost 45 minutes. After giving up 14 runs a night ago to Otterbein, Allegheny's Bobby Kusinsky (Harrison City, Pa./Penn-Trafford) threw seven frames and allowed just one run on one hit against the Vikings (1-1). Kusinsky had a no-hitter through the sixth and commanded the heater and breaking ball with class. It was one of the best starts of his career as he picked up his first win of the season.

Joseph Raleigh (Clermont, Fla./East Ridge) came in out of the bullpen to begin the eighth inning and finished the rest of the contest while picking up the save.

Offensively, Matt Jennings (Birmingham, Mich./Brother Rice) laced an RBI double down the right field line to bring in Chase Chodkowski (Buffalo, N.Y./West Seneca West) in the first inning. Tyson Bryant-Dawson (Oakland, Calif./Manvel (Texas)) blasted a two-run home run over the left field wall in the bottom of the third. It was his first long bomb of the season, and it gave the Gators a 3-0 lead.

Otterbein 12, Allegheny 2
Allegheny used four different arms across seven innings, but unlike the earlier win over Bethany Lutheran, the Gators could not contain the Otterbein (5-2) batters.

Allegheny's starter, Daniel Morgano (Allison Park, Pa./Vincentian Academy), pitched just 2.2 innings while giving up seven runs on eight hits. The Cardinals then put up a five-spot with five additional knocks in the fourth inning en route to the victory.

Allegheny scored once in the third and added one in the seventh. Nick Banez (Edmonds, Wash./Meadowdale) doubled and scored off an RBI groundout from Brady Nolin (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) in the third. The Gators put across another run in the seventh when Banez looped an RBI single into right to drive in Jake Stotsky (Pittsburgh, Pa./Vincentian Academy). However, it was not enough run support to threaten the Otterbein lead.

Inside the Box Score - Game 1
  • The Gators allowed only three hits and two walks off the combined effort from Kusinsky and Raleigh.
  • Kusinsky racked up seven strikeouts in 7.0 innings in a dominating victory.
  • Raleigh struck out one in the final 2.0 innings.
  • Offensively, Allegheny tallied three runs off of three hits.
  • Jennings finished 1-for-4 with an RBI double.
  • Bryant-Dawson's lone hit was a two-run home run.

Inside the Box Score - Game 2
  • The Gators were outhit by the Cardinals, 14-to-7.
  • Otterbein's Luke Walter picked up the win as he threw all 7.0 innings.
  • Morgano was charged with the loss after surrendering seven runs in 2.2 innings.
  • Garrett Senchur (Irwin, Pa./Norwin) was the only Allegheny pitcher that did not allow a run, and he recorded all three outs via the strikeout.
  • Banez and Jennings both went 2-for-3 at the dish.
  • Banez scored once and added an RBI single in the seventh inning.

  • It marks the third game of Kusinsky's career in which he lasted at least 7.0 innings.
  • In the late game, Banez made his first collegiate start at third base against Otterbein.
  • Bryant-Dawson's home run was the fifth of his career.
