MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny softball team used a balanced effort of pitching and hitting to sweep Geneva in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader Thursday (March 30), winning game one 10-2 in five innings and game two 4-1.
Game One – Allegheny 10, Geneva 2 (5 innings)
After a scoreless first inning, the Allegheny bats came alive in the second, producing four hits and four runs.
Sophia Godzak (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) led off the frame with a single.
Audrey Blarr (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence) stepped in to pinch run. After
Samantha Phillips (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) was walked,
Isabelle Wakefield (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek) hit a RBI single up the middle, plating Blarr.
Halle Book (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Catholic) laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Phillips and make it 2-0.
Aleya Belardinelli (Melbourne, Fla./West Shore) then singled through the right side of the infield, bringing Wakefield home for the third run.
Cameron Long (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) smacked a double off the right center wall, which allowed Belardinelli to come around from first, making it 4-0.
After the Golden Tornadoes hit a solo home run in the third, the Gators answered with a run in the bottom of the inning. Godzak registered her second single of the afternoon. After moving to third,
Hadley Horensky (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Seton LaSalle Catholic) singled through the left side, bringing the lead back to four runs.
Geneva added one more run in the top of the fifth, but once again, the Gators had a big response in the bottom of the frame.
Sofia Genareo (Lakewood, N.Y./Southwestern Central) led off with a solo blast over the left field fence, her third home run of the year. Godzak found her third hit of the game before Horensky reached on an error and Wakefield hit her second single of the game to load the bases. Book was hit by a pitch to score Godzak while Belardinelli hit a RBI single to right field, scoring Horensky. With two outs,
Olivia Devries (Kent, Ohio/Field) hit a walk-off double to left center, scoring Belardinelli and Book to end the game in five innings, 10-2.
Inside the Box
- Belardinelli got it done at the plate and in the circle. At the plate, she went three-of-four with two RBI and two runs scored. As the starting pitcher, she struck out nine while allowing just four hits and two runs.
- Godzak also had three hits with two runs scored.
- Long and Wakefield both had a pair of hits with a RBI.
- Devries drove in the final two runs with a double.
- Genareo hit her third home run of the year, a solo shot.
- Horensky had a hit and a RBI.
- Book had a pair of RBI.
Game Two – Allegheny 4, Geneva 1
Belardinelli started where she left off in game one, leading off with a base hit. After moving to third with two outs, a bloop single by Genareo brought her home and put the Gators in front, 1-0.
The Golden Tornadoes tied the game in the top of third, scoring one run on two hits.
In the bottom of the third, Genareo went yard for the second time on the day, launching a shot over the left field fence to put the Gators back in front, 2-1. Godzak was walked and
Maley Gleason (Houston, Texas/Westside) came in to pinch run. After moving up to third, Gleason came across the plate on a wild pitch, making it 3-1.
Genareo led off the fifth with a double to left center. Wakefield entered as a pinch-runner for Genareo and scored on a Phillips single, bringing the score to 4-1.
Those runs proved to be enough as
Samantha Dzierba (Colden, N.Y./Orchard Park) limited to Geneva batters throughout the contest, striking out the final two batters to seal the win.
Inside the Box
- Dzierba earned the pitching decision for the Gators, going 7.0 innings, allowing just one run on six hits while striking out six.
- Genareo went three-for-three with two RBI, including her fourth home run of the year.
- Belardinelli, Blarr and Phillips all had two hits apiece.
- Wakefield and Gleason both scored as pinch runners.

- The Gators moved to 11-5 on the season and 3-1 in PAC action.
- Allegheny is now 13-6 all-time against Geneva.
