MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny women's basketball team fell at home to Washington and Jefferson, 66-43, in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) action Wednesday (Feb. 1).
The Presidents owned a slight lead early on, but a three-pointer by
Alexis Caldwell (Whitefish Bay, Wis./Whitefish Bay) followed by a fast break layup from
Emily Lauer (Knox, Pa./Keystone) tied it at 12. After trading baskets, however, Washington and Jefferson scored the final four points of the frame to lead 18-14 after the first quarter.
The late first quarter surge carried over to the second as the Presidents opened on a 6-0 run. The Gators fought back, answering with a 9-3 run to cut the lead to 27-23. Similar to the end of the first, the Presidents ended the frame on a run, 9-2, to lead 36-25 at halftime.
Caldwell led the Gators with seven points in the first half.
Sarah Santicola (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) added six points while Lauer and
Jess Bickart (Cranberry Township. Pa./Seneca Valley) had five apiece.
The Gators kept pace with the Presidents throughout the third quarter. A late three-pointer by Washington and Jefferson proved to be the difference between the two as they held a 13-10 edge for the 10 minutes.
Washington and Jefferson was able to outscore the Gators 17-8 in the fourth quarter as they sealed the conference win.
Inside the Box
- Bickart finished the game with nine points, seven rebounds and three assists.
- Caldwell also ended with nine points while grabbing five rebounds and three assists. She also led the team with five steals.
- Lauer was the third Gator to share the scoring lead with nine points.
- Santicola led the Gators with eight rebounds while matching that mark in points. She also blocked three shots and tallied three assists.
- Sofia Genareo (Lakewood, N.Y./Southwestern Central) had four points and four rebounds.
- The Gators tallied nine steals.
- Allegheny scored 10 fast break points while not allowing any by the Presidents.
