Volleyball Defeats Grove City in PAC Quarterfinals

MEADVILLE, Pa. – The third-seed Allegheny volleyball team defeated sixth-seed Grove City in the quarterfinals of the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Championships in four sets Tuesday (Nov. 7) in Meadville.
 
Allegheny won the sets 25-18, 25-21, 22-25, 25-19.
 
The Gators got out to a quick start, scoring the first five points with two aces by Izzy Gray (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) in the opening set. The Allegheny advantage continued to grow as the Wolverines used their second timeout trailing 13-5. The lead would grow to as much as 10 as they captured the opening set 25-18.
 
The Wolverines had an early lead in set two, but a 4-0 run by the Gators pushed them back in front, 10-8. The set remained close as the Gators had a narrow lead, 17-14, when Grove City called their second timeout. The Gators kept that lead the rest of the way, taking the set 25-21.
 
Grove City controlled the pace in the third set early on. The Gators would make up some ground and cut the lead to 17-16 before the final timeout of the set. Following the timeout, the Gators completed a 4-0 run to lead 19-17. However, the Wolverines fought back and won the set 25-22 to extend the match.
 
The Gators gained momentum early in the third, jumping out to a 6-3 lead. The run would reach 9-0 before the Wolverines broke it up. The lead grew to as much as 10 multiple times as the Gators took the set 25-19, advancing to the PAC semifinals.
 
Inside the Box
  • Dagney Javes (Frederick, Colo./Dawson School) led the Gators with 17 kills and four blocks.
  • Angelee Bawek (Goodyear, Ariz./Estrella Foothills) had 16 kills to go alongside 15 digs. 
  • Emma Chambers (Stoutsville, Ohio/Amanda Clearcreek) was also in double-digits with 10 kills.
  • Sydney Kirk (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton LaSalle Catholic) had five kills and four digs while Carly Beers (Warren, Pa./Warren) had four kills. 
  • Meagan Robare (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) led the team with 23 assists while also tallying three blocks.
  • Gray totaled 20 assists while also recording eight digs and a team-high three aces.
  • Jacy Diaz (Barranquitas, Puerto Rico/Gallatin (Tenn.)) had a career-high 38 digs. 
  • Alejandra Fernandez (Caguas, Puerto Rico/Commonwealth Parkville) also had a career-high in digs with 16 and added a pair of aces.
  • Duru Akbas (Ankara, Turkey/Layton Christian Academy (Utah)) had 13 digs and two aces. 
News and Notes
  • The win marks the 22nd on the season for the Gators.
  • The victory also gave the Gators their first PAC volleyball playoff victory in school history.
  • Diaz's 38 digs tied for the third most in program history for a four-set match.
