Quakers Defeat Gators in Shootout

MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny field hockey team battled Earlham until the very end, but fell to the Quakers in a shootout Saturday (Oct. 7) in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) play.

Neither team was able to get on the scoreboard in the opening half. The Gators owned a 6-3 advantage in shots and a 4-0 edge in penalty corners for the 30 minutes. Meredythe Baird (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Holy Redeemer) made a pair of stops in the half.

Each team had a shot in the third quarter, but the game remained scoreless heading into the fourth. Allegheny had a couple chances in the fourth quarter, including a late Ramsay Smith (Williamsburg, Va./Lafayette) opportunity, but the game went into overtime.

In the first overtime session, each team put a shot on target but neither got past the goalie.

Allegheny controlled the second overtime, outshooting the Quakers 7-0 and earning five penalty corners but were unable to break through as the game went to a shootout.

Earlham had the first opportunity and converted the attempt. Maya Francisco (Toledo, Ohio/Maumee Valley Country Day School) answered with a goal for the Gators, tying it at one. Both teams missed their next attempts before the Quakers made their third attempt to take the lead, 2-1. The Gators were unable to capitalize on their final attempts, as a stick save on their final attempt ended the shootout in favor of Earlham.
