BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- The Allegheny College men's soccer team suffered a 4-2 setback on the road on Wednesday night, as the Gators fell to Geneva College at Reeves Field.
Geneva (7-4-1, 4-0-0 PAC) retained its position atop the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) standings with its fourth consecutive win. However, Allegheny (3-7-0, 2-2-0 PAC) snapped the Golden Tornadoes' three-game shutout streak despite the losing effort.
The Golden Tornado offense had the upper hand for much of the evening, forcing
Caleb Kendra (Beaver Falls, Pa./Riverside) into a busy 90 minutes in his hometown. Kendra tied a season-high with eight saves, which kept the Gators within striking distance.
Allegheny's first goal was a long one. After a foul called against Geneva on an attempted slide tackle,
Jacob Kubik-Pauw (Hanover, N.H./Hanover) lined up for the free kick from about 37 yards out. Geneva's keeper, Evan Shale, anticipated a play from one of the many Gators in the box and took a few steps off his line, but Kubik-Pauw sailed the ball over his head on the set piece.
In the 58th minute, Allegheny trimmed a 3-1 deficit to a single goal. A handball resulted in a penalty kick, and the first attempt taken by
Gunnar Brettell (Steubenville, Ohio/Indian Creek) was saved. Another whistle immediately halted play, and the referee signaled for a re-kick. Brettell rifled his second-chance shot into the upper-right corner to make it a one-goal difference.
While the Gators frantically searched for an equalizer, the Golden Tornadoes received an insurance goal in the 88th minute.
