BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – For the second time this season, the Allegheny volleyball team won a dramatic five set match against Geneva, picking up a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) road victory Friday (Oct. 27).
Allegheny took the sets 18-25, 25-15, 23-25, 25-21, 15-12.
The Gators got out to a fast start in the opening set, taking a 6-2 lead, but the Golden Tornadoes tied it at seven. A 7-1 run by Geneva pushed them in front 18-12. After a timeout, the Gators cut the lead to 21-17. However, the Golden Tornadoes closed the set on a 4-1 run.
Allegheny rebounded in the second set. The Gators strung together multiple runs as they tied the match with a 25-15 win.
The third set went back-and-forth till the end when Geneva jumped in front. The Gators staved off a set point before falling 25-23.
The Gators had control early in the fourth set, moving ahead 11-6 after a 5-1 run. Once again, though, the Golden Tornadoes made up the difference to tie the set at 16 before gaining a three point lead, 20-17. After calling a timeout, the Gators strung together a 3-0 run to tie it back up. After a Geneva timeout, the Gators finished the comeback, winning the set 25-21 after a pair of blocks to force a fifth and deciding set.
Each side opened the final set with runs as they found themselves even at four. Geneva then went on another run as Allegheny called a timeout down 7-5. The timeout paid off as the Gators would win the ensuing three points, taking an 8-7 lead. After trading points, the Gators won two straight points to lead 12-10. The Golden Tornadoes called a timeout, after which the Gators finished the set with a 15-12 win to seal the match win.
Inside the Box
- Dagney Javes (Frederick, Colo./Dawson School) led the Gators with 20 kills while only commiting one error. She also tallied seven blocks, including two solo.
- Emma Chambers (Stoutsville, Ohio/Amanda Clearcreek) was second on the team with 13 kills.
- Angelee Bawek (Goodyear, Ariz./Estrella Foothills) had seven kills, 14 digs and three aces.
- Izzy Gray (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) had a 20/20 game with 20 assists and 20 digs. Her dig total was a career-high.
- Meagan Robare (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) also had 20 assists.
- Jacy Diaz (Barranquitas, Puerto Rico/Gallatin (Tenn.)) had a team-high 28 digs.
- Alejandra Fernandez (Caguas, Puerto Rico/Commonwealth Parkville) had 14 digs.
- Sydney Kirk (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton LaSalle Catholic) and Carly Beers (Warren, Pa./Warren) had five blocks apiece.
News and Notes
- The Gators moved to 19-8 on the season with a 6-2 mark in PAC action.
- Allegheny is now 12-8 all-time against Geneva.
- The win clinched a home PAC playoff game.
