ERIE, Pa. -- Another outstanding fall season for Allegheny College women's tennis team came to an unfortunate end on Saturday.
Second-seeded Grove City College defeated the top-seeded Gators in the 2023 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Championship Tournament finals by a 5-2 score in front of a hearty crowd at the Westwood Racquet Club in Erie, Pennsylvania.
The loss ended a remarkable run for Allegheny against PAC opposition. Last year's conference champions, the Gators (10-2) went two consecutive fall seasons without losing to a PAC opponent in the regular season and reached the tournament finals in back-to-back years.
Grove City (12-3) opened the match with a 2-1 lead after winning the first and third doubles matches.
Jean-Arlette Legrand (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Commonwealth Parkville School) and
Maria Lounder (Pittsburgh, Pa./Moon Area) teamed up for Allegheny's only doubles point, as they captured an 8-5 win on the second court.
Standout first year,
Rei Etsumi (Honolulu, Hawaii/President William McKinley), evened the score at 2-all with a quick 6-2, 6-3 victory over Alyssa Good at No. 5 singles.Â
The Wolverines, however, won the next three singles matches at No. 3, No. 1, and the deciding point at No. 6.Â
