MEADVILLE, Pa. -- Allegheny College field hockey fell in a hard-fought battle to Kenyon College in a North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) match by a 2-1 final score on a rainy Saturday afternoon.
Despite the gray skies, the Gators celebrated Senior Day before the game to recognize only the second class of four-year letterwinners in team history.
Ella O'Connor (Haddon Township, N.J./Haddon Township),
Maya Francisco (Toledo, Ohio/Maumee Valley Country Day School),
Hana Miller (Willards, Md./Worcester Preparatory School),
Hannah Hinterleiter (Erie, Pa./Conneaut Area),
Molly Miller (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg),
Apurva Kannu (Pleasanton, Calif./Amador Valley),
Debbie Nalesnik (Milford, N.J./Delaware Valley Regional), and
Meredythe Baird (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Holy Redeemer) were each honored, as well as fifth-year senior
Ramsay Smith (Williamsburg, Va./Lafayette).
The Owls (10-6, 6-3 NCAC) scored first, but Allegheny (4-10, 2-7 NCAC) responded to make it a one-goal game in the third quarter. Following a missed penalty stroke by Kenyon, the Gators flipped the field and got the ball deep into the offensive end. From the right wing, O'Connor fed the ball to
Bella Cowen (Louisville, Ky./Kentucky Day School), who found the back of the cage for the equalizer 6:16 into the quarter.
The remainder of the third quarter featured an outstanding performance by Baird in goal. She made half of her 12 saves in the third to preserve the 1-1 tie.
Playing a woman-up thanks to a green card assessed at the end of the third, the Owls quickly ran downfield on the opening whistle of the fourth quarter, scoring the game-winner in only 45 seconds.
Allegheny had multiple opportunities in the closing minutes. At one point, the Gators received three consecutive penalty corners. In total, the Blue and Gold had four corners in the last five minutes, but Kenyon keeper Megan Lydon saved both shots on goal to seal the win.
