Women's Soccer Settles For Draw in Home Finale vs. Saint Vincent

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- On a brisk autumn night under the lights on the Robertson Athletic Complex blue turf, the Allegheny College women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw against Saint Vincent College.

With the fight for a postseason berth coming down to the wire, the Gators (5-9-1, 3-4-1 PAC) earned a critical point by tying the third-place Bearcats (9-3-3, 5-1-2 PAC). With two games left in the regular season, Allegheny is tied for seventh in the PAC standings with 10 points and trails No. 6 Franciscan University by just three points.

The Gators opened Wednesday's match with a quick goal and looked poised to hand Saint Vincent just its second conference loss of the season for much of the contest. In the fifth minute, Julieta Schworm (Newark, Ohio/Licking Valley) played a long through ball down the middle of the field to Emma Miller (Elyria, Ohio/Lake Ridge Academy). Miller raced down the field, shook off her defender, and finished the play with her team-leading sixth goal of the year.

The one-goal lead lasted until the 53rd minute when Tanisha Grewal cleaned up a messy play inside the six-yard box for the equalizer.

Both sides had numerous chances to produce a go-ahead goal, but it wasn't meant to be. Allegheny had two opportunities in the 67th minute. The first came off the foot of Miller, but Saint Vincent Kapper Madison Arnold made an excellent diving stop on what looked to be a sure goal. On the ensuing corner kick, Hallie Johnson (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua Academy) was able to get her head on the ball, but pushed it just over the crossbar.

The last six shots of the game were all taken by Allegheny, who played the final 27-plus minutes a woman-up after Morgan Klingeman was issued her second yellow card in the 73rd minute. In the 88th minute, Schworm came within inches of a game-winner, but her shot rang the post, and her second-chance try on the rebound sailed wide.
