Men's Soccer Drops Heartbreaker vs. Chatham

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Allegheny College men's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) loss against Chatham University on a miserable and rainy Saturday at Frank B. Fuhrer Field.

Although the Gators (4-9-0, 3-4-0 PAC) rebounded in the 85th minute to even the score at 2-all, Chatham (5-8-2, 4-3-1 PAC) had luck on its side in the closing moments and pulled out the one-goal victory. In the final minute, the Cougars advanced the ball down the left wing deep into Allegheny's defensive third. William Lowthert (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) attempted to clear the ball out of bounds, but his kick ricocheted off a teammate and right to Azavier Coppin, who fired the ball into the net from about 11 yards out.

It was a disappointing ending to an otherwise strong performance. The Gators controlled possession for much of the first half, and, by the final whistle, had outshot the Cougars by a wide margin, 25-to-10. Allegheny scored first in the 23rd minute when Gunnar Brettell (Steubenville, Ohio Indian Creek) put the finishing touch on a long cross from Jose Cifuentes (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Kiski Prep (Pa.)) from the right-wing side.

In the 85th minute, Jacob Kubik-Pauw (Hanover, N.H./Hanover) connected with Brady Napoleon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) for the tying goal. A well-placed cross from the opposite side of the field found Napoleon inside the box. The 6-foot-3 defensive midfielder used his height to his advantage as he leaped over the Chatham defender covering him and headed the ball over the keeper.

Allegheny had a handful of opportunities for a go-ahead tally before Chatham's game-winner in the last 20 seconds. Two of those chances came from Cam Kaminski (Bowling Green, Ohio/Maumee Valley Country Day), and Napoleon forced Justin Tuefel to make his 11th save of the afternoon on Allegheny's last possession with only 52 seconds remaining on the clock.
