MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Allegheny College men's tennis team closed the fall portion of the 2023-24 season by edging Division II Daemen University in a tightly contested 5-4 non-conference match at the Robertson Athletic Complex.
Before the match, the Gators held a special ceremony, where the returning members of last season's Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) championship team were presented with their championship rings.
Following the presentation, the Gators (2-1) were pressed into action with tough matches throughout the lineup. Allegheny opened with a 2-1 lead over the Wildcats (1-4) by winning the top two doubles matches. At the No. 1 position,
Anton Hedlund (Hovas, Sweden /Katrinelundsgymnasiet) and
David Rodriguez (St. Ann's, Trinidad and Tobago/Fatima College) needed a tiebreaker to defeat Daemen's top duo of Luis de Vuyst and Juan Alvarez, 8-5 (7-5).
During the singles portion of the match, the Gators received wins at No. 3 from
Will Jarvie (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) and No. 6 from
Mitchell Curtis (Aurora, Ohio/Aurora). Hedlund, playing opposite de Vuyst on the first court, won the clinching match. He overcame a first-set loss to beat the fifth-year senior from Belgium 6-3 in the second set and 6-1 in the third set.Â
