Field Hockey Halts Ohio Wesleyan's Undefeated Streak

DELAWARE, Ohio -- The Allegheny College field hockey team continued its remarkable run to start the 2022 season by upsetting Ohio Wesleyan University on its home turf by a 1-0 final score on Saturday.

The Gators, who improved to 7-1 to start the year, spoiled the Battling Bishops' previously undefeated season. Ohio Wesleyan (6-1), the reigning North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) champion who reached the second round of the 2021 NCAA Division III Tournament, suffered its first loss of 2022 and allowed its first goal in seven games.

After 57 minutes of scoreless action, Allegheny logged the only goal of the contest with 2:19 to play in regulation. On a penalty corner, Hannah Sharp (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) inserted the ball to Becca Winton (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) at the top of the arc. Winton fired the ball towards the cage and back to Sharp, who got a deflection inside the left post for the game-winner.

  • On paper, Ohio Wesleyan controlled the game with big leads in shots (13-to-4) and penalty corners (14-to-5).
  • In the second half, however, shots were even at four apiece.
  • The Gators also had more shots on goal, 3-to-2.
  • Clinging to the 1-0 lead inside the final minute, Allegheny blocked two shots and held the Battling Bishops scoreless on three penalty corners.
