UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – The Allegheny volleyball team fell in a five-set battle (23-25, 25-15, 23-25, 31-29, 15-10) on the road at John Carroll Thursday night (Sept. 22) in nonconference action.
In the opening set, the Gators overcame an early deficit to tie it at nine apiece. After that, neither team was able to gain more than a two point advantage in the set. Leading 24-23,
Cheyenne Wilson (Chico, Calif./Pleasant Valley) clinched the set point for the Gators with a kill.
The Blue Streaks controlled the momentum throughout the second set as they bounced back to tie the match at 1-1.
The third set was even early on, but the Gators utilized a 5-1 run to gain a 14-11 advantage. The Blue Streaks fought back to tie the set at 16. After back-and-forth play, Allegheny earned a set point, 24-23, following a
Dagney Javes (Frederick, Colo./Dawson School) kill. A John Carroll attack error gave the set to the Gators as they regained the match lead.
John Carroll built a 15-11 lead in the fourth set. However, the Gators put together a 9-2 run to pull ahead, 20-17. The Blue Streaks fought off four match points to tie the set at 24. The battle continued until John Carroll eventually won the set, 31-29.
The momentum carried over to the fifth set for John Carroll as they jumped out to an early lead. The Gators fought back but it was not enough to overcome the early deficit as they fell in the fifth set 15-10.
Inside the Box
- Wilson led the Gators with a season-high 17 kills to go alongside nine digs.
- Kendall Crum (Chattanooga, Tenn./Girls Preparatory) finished with 10 kills while India McCruter (Columbus, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) had eight and Javes had seven.
- Jacy Diaz (Barranquitas, Puerto Rico/Gallatin (Tenn.)) led the team with 19 digs while Alejandra Fernandez (Caguas, Puerto Rico/Commonwealth Parkville) had nine digs.
- Javes had five blocks while Wilson and Emma Chambers (Stoutsville, Ohio/Amanda Clearcreek) had four apiece.
- Meagan Robare (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) had 20 assists wile Leah Ungashick (Akron, Ohio/Coventry) had 16.

- The Gators move to 7-8 on the season and 4-14 all-time against John Carroll.
- Diaz had six aces, which is the most by a Gator this season.
- The 52 kills were the most by Allegheny this year.
