MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Allegheny College field hockey team started another win streak with a second consecutive victory on Sunday afternoon, as the Gators took down Earlham College by a 2-1 final score on the Blue Turf at the Robertson Athletic Complex.
The Gators (6-1) faced a tough defensive squad in Earlham (0-6). Although Allegheny was awarded a season-high 20 penalty corners and finished with a 20-to-8 advantage in shots, the Quakers never let the game escape their reach.
After 18-and-a-half scoreless minutes, however, the constant penalty corners finally paid off for Allegheny. The Gators received two consecutive corner attempts in the 19th minute, and
Kinsley Greenlaw (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) slapped a hard shot from the top of the circle on the second try to put Allegheny ahead, 1-0.
Bella Cowen (Louisville, Ky./Kentucky Day School) doubled the lead to 2-0 with 2:16 remaining in the third quarter. After racing by the Quaker defense, her first shot was kick-saved by goalie Rachel Alma. The ball remained loose at Alma's feet, and Cowen had a wide-open cage to score with Alma unable to get back to her feet in time.
Earlham kept things interesting with a fourth-quarter goal, but the Gators did not allow the Quakers to record another shot in the final 10 minutes.
