Volleyball Beats Waynesburg, Fredonia to Close Allegheny Invitational

MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny College volleyball team secured a pair of victories to close out the annual Allegheny Invitational on Saturday and improved to an even 7-7 on the season.

The Gators opened the day by taking down fellow Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) foe Waynesburg University, 3-0 (25-12, 25-19, 25-12), in a non-conference match, before posting a 3-1 (22-25, 25-14, 25-17, 25-16) triumph against Fredonia State.

Allegheny 3, Waynesburg 0 (25-12, 25-19, 25-12)
The Gators outdid the Yellow Jackets in every statistical category in the first match of the day. Allegheny more than doubled Waynesburg in kills (40-to-17) and held significant leads in aces (9-to-1), blocks (3-to-1), and assists (36-to-14). In the first set, the Gators floored 16 kills while committing only one error for a match-best .395 attack percentage.

Even though the offensive numbers weren't as impressive in the second set, the Gators won the first four points and 10 of the first 12 to take command. In the third, Allegheny went on a lengthy run that turned a 7-5 margin into a 14-5 lead. The rally was fueled from the service line by Dagney Javes (Frederick, Colo./Dawson School), who tossed three aces to help the Gators put the set out of reach.

Allegheny 3, Fredonia 1 (22-25, 25-14, 25-17, 25-16)
The Blue Devils threatened early with a strong first-set performance, but the Gators quickly rebounded to earn the victory in four. After surrendering 16 kills on a .314 hitting rate in the opening set, Fredonia's attack rate fell in each of the next three sets as the Allegheny defense found its form.

Highlighting the Allegheny effort was Kendall Crum (Chattanooga, Tenn./Girls Preparatory), who paced all pin hitters with 15 kills while maintaining a .324 attack percentage.
