Women's Tennis Knocks Off Defending PAC Champs

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio -- Allegheny College women's tennis earned a key Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory on Wednesday afternoon, as the Gators took down the two-time defending conference champions from Franciscan University of Steubenville by a 6-3 score.

The Gators (3-0, 2-0 PAC), who were voted the No. 1 team in the PAC in the 2022 preseason coaches poll, put the Barons (3-2, 1-1 PAC) on notice in the first regular-season meeting between the two programs as conference rivals. Franciscan, which went undefeated in conference play during the 2021-22 season, suffered its first regular-season conference loss since falling to Westminster College, 8-1, on April 18, 2021.

The Barons began on the right foot by taking two of three doubles matches. The tandem of Katherine Marks (Argyle, Texas/Liberty Christian) and Maria Lounder (Pittsburgh, Pa./Moon Area) picked up Allegheny's only doubles win in the second spot in the lineup against Haley Davinsizer and Estelle Leon. The Gators responded by securing five singles matches, with Sabrina Rodriguez (Kissimmee, Fla./Professional and Technical) clinching the team's victory by beating Claire Cardie in fourth singles, 6-2, 6-4.

With the match already decided, Taylor Hayes (Geneva, Ill./Geneva Community) wrapped up a hard-fought contest against Leon with a tiebreak win. Although Leon earned a 7-6 (4) win in the first set, Hayes rebounded to capture the second set, 6-2, before winning the 10-point tiebreak, 10-7.
