Alread's Pick-Six, Strong Defense Lead Football to Lopsided Win at Thiel

GREENVILLE, Pa. -- A stout defensive performance, including three forced turnovers and an interception return for a touchdown, helped the Allegheny College football team secure a 34-6 non-conference victory over Thiel College for the Gators' first win of the 2022 season.

Defense shined all afternoon for the Gators (1-1), who held the Tomcats (0-2) to a mere 217 yards of total offense. Allegheny began the afternoon with a fourth-and-1 stop on Thiel's first offensive drive, before Hudson Alread (Victor, N.Y./Victor) took a pick-six 52 yards on the next drive for the game's first points.

Allegheny scored 19 unanswered and did surrender any points until Thiel's last drive of the first half. In the second quarter, Tre Worship (East Cleveland, Ohio/Shaw) scored his first of two rushing touchdowns on the day, before Jack Johnson (Hingham, Mass./Hingham/Milford Academy) hit Ian Durci (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) for a 24-yard touchdown pass to go up 19-0.

With 2:25 to go in the third quarter, Worship rumbled in from 3-yards out, and Johnson connected with Shawn Stelling (Southampton, N.Y./Southampton) for the two-point conversion to extend Allegheny's advantage to 27-6. On the ensuing kick return, Thiel's Jared Curcio coughed the ball up and set up the Gator offense with a short field of only 34 yards. First-year running back Antwan Brown (Youngstown, Ohio/Warren JFK) capped off the 11-play drive with a rushing touchdown of his own to conclude the day's scoring.

Inside the Box
  • Allegheny outpaced Thiel in total yards (289-to-217), passing yards (163-to-122), and rushing yards (126-to-95).
  • The Gators converted 9-of-21 third downs for a rate of 42.9%.
  • On the other hand, the defense held the Tomcats to a 2-for-16 (12.5%) showing on third down.
  • Johnson led all passers with 117 yards while completing 13 of his 24 attempts.
  • John Ian Duron (Coral Springs, Fla./J.P. Taravella) led all runners with 56 yards, while Worship added 48, and Brown carried the ball for 28 yards in his collegiate debut.
  • Nine different Gators caught a pass, led by Austin Ferguson (Creedmoor, N.C./South Granville) with two receptions for 49 yards.
  • Alread and Azariah Beaugard (Santa Clarita, Calif./Saugus) each had an interception, with Alread taking his the distance for Allegheny's first touchdown.

  • Allegheny improved to 1-1 overall, while Thiel fell to 0-2 this season.
  • The Gators' lead in the all-time series against the Tomcats is now 41-32-5.
  • Dating back to 2017, the Gators have won three consecutive meetings with Thiel.
  • Six points are the fewest allowed by the Allegheny defense in a single game since defeating Thiel, 38-6, on August 31, 2017.
  • The last time Allegheny had multiple interceptions in a game also came in the previous meeting with Thiel on September 4, 2021.
