MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Allegheny College women's soccer team fought hard on Thursday night at the Blue Turf at the Robertson Athletic Complex, but the visiting Cardinals from St. John Fisher University prevailed by a 3-0 final score.
In the 2022 season opener, the Gators managed to put only one of their three shots on target. Meanwhile, Fisher peppered the cage with a game-high 22 shots and 14 shots on goal. Despite the disparity in offensive production, the Allegheny defense limited the Cardinals to just three goals, one of which came on a second-half penalty shot.
Junior goalkeeper
Kari May (Erie, Pa. | McDowell) had a busy night between the posts. With 11 saves, she reached double-digit stops for the third time in her career with the Gators. Perhaps May's finest work came in the 38th minute, when she denied Gwenyth Madden twice in a matter of seconds. Madden raced through the back line and had a great one-on-one opportunity against May, who not only deflected the first attempt, but was then able to snag the second-chance header.
The Gators were only credited with three shots, one of which was saved by St. John Fisher keeper Avery Brynes on a long free kick by
Taylor McKindley. Allegheny's best scoring opportunity came in the 73rd minute on a free kick from about 18 yards out. However,
Emma Miller's attempt sailed just high over the crossbar.
