Gators fall in close battles with Geneva

MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny softball team returned to the friendly confines of the Robertson Athletic Complex to host Geneva in a nonconference doubleheader Tuesday (April 5).

Game One – Geneva 1, Allegheny 0

The Golden Tornadoes took advantage of a Gator error in the third inning to score the game's lone run.

In the bottom of the seventh, Olivia Devries (Kent, Ohio/Field) earned a walk with one out. Isabelle Wakefield (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek) followed up with a double down the right-field line to put runners at second and third. However, Geneva got out of the jam to secure the win.

Hadley Horensky (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Seton LaSalle Catholic), Joplin Osgood (Coudersport, Pa./Coudersport) and Wakefield all hit doubles. Osgood totaled two hits. Sofia Genareo (Lakewood, N.Y./Southwestern Central) also had a single.

Samantha Dzierba (Colden, N.Y./Orchard Park) scattered just five hits while allowing no earned runs or walks and striking out six.

Game Two – Geneva 11, Allegheny 9

Aleya Belardinelli (Melbourne, Fla./West Shore) was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the first. After Belardinelli moved to second on a Paige Ziggas (Beaver, Pa./Beaver Area) sacrifice bunt, Horensky singled and Osgood walked to load the bases. Genareo hit a single through the right side scoring two runs. Wakefield followed with an RBI to score Osgood and make it 3-0.

The Golden Tornadoes tied the game in the top of the third with a three-run home run.

Allegheny regained the lead in the bottom of the frame. With two outs, Genareo singled through the right side to score Horensky and give the Gators a 4-3 lead.

Geneva answered in the fourth with another three-run inning to move ahead 6-4.

Genareo drove in her third run of the game in the fifth as she scored Cameron Long (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) to pull the Gators within one run. However, Geneva added one more in the sixth to make it 6-4.

Devries led off the bottom of the sixth with a single to left field. Kaylin Tang (Vienna, Va./South Lakes) came in to pinch run and scored on a Horensky single.

In the bottom of the seventh, Osgood led off with a double to left field. Another double from Wakefield scored Osgood and sent the game into extra innings.

After Geneva scored in the first extra inning, Gleason scored on an error to tie the game with two outs in the bottom of the frame.

In the ninth inning, Geneva scored three runs to take an 11-8 lead.

Espy Zuniga (Boerne, Texas/Samuel V Champion) drove in Osgood on a double in the ninth to cut the lead to 11-9. However, the Gators were unable to produce the final two runs as Geneva picked up the win.

Genareo had three hits and four RBI in the game. Horensky also tallied three hits with one run driven in. Wakefield had a pair of RBI while Devries had a pair of hits.

The Gators remain at home Sunday (April 10) when they host Wittenberg in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) action.
