Allegheny earns split at Denison behind game one win

GRANVILLE, Ohio – Allegheny traveled to Denison for a North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) doubleheader on Saturday (April 23).

The Gators won game one 3-2 before falling in game two 7-4.

Game One – Allegheny 3, Denison 2

Sofia Genareo (Lakewood, N.Y./Southwestern Central) led off the second inning with a single down the right field line. Two batters later, Sophia Godzak (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) belted her first career home run as the Gators built a two run lead.

The Gators kept the two run advantage until the fourth, where the Big Red tied the game.

In the top of the seventh, Olivia Devries (Kent, Ohio/Field) was walked while pinch hitting. Anna Castlevetere (Clarence, N.Y./Nardin Academy) re-entered the game and moved to second on an Isabelle Wakefield (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek) sacrifice bunt and to third on a wild pitch. Aleya Belardinelli (Melbourne, Fla./West Shore) then singled up the middle, scoring Castlevetere and putting the Gators in front 3-2.

In the bottom of the seventh, Belardinelli forced three straight flyouts as the Gators secured the win.

Belardinelli struck out four batters in the win.

Godzak led the offense with her two-run home run. Belardinelli supplied the game-winning RBI that scored Castlevetere. Paige Ziggas (Beaver, Pa./Beaver Area), Genareo, Hadley Horensky (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Seton LaSalle Catholic) and Cameron Long (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) also had hits.

Game Two – Denison 7, Allegheny 4

The Gators got on the board first once again. In the second, Horensky reached on an error to lead off. Long would single later in the inning, reaching third as the ball went past the left fielder and bringing Horensky home. Wakefield was hit by a pitch to put runners at the corners for Ziggas, who doubled off the left-field fence, bringing both runners home and giving Allegheny a 3-0 lead.

Allegheny added to their lead in the third. Joplin Osgood (Coudersport, Pa./Coudersport) and Horensky earned walks in the inning. Godzak hit a RBI single up the middle to score Osgood,

The Big Red made up some ground by scoring twice in the fifth inning and one in the sixth to make it a 4-3 game.

In the bottom of the seventh, the home team tied the game at 4-4 before ending the contest with a three-run home run for the split.

Godzak and Long had two hits apiece in the game. Ziggas had one hit that accounted for two runs.

The Gators are scheduled to travel to Kenyon for an NCAC doubleheader at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26.
