Softball drops road games at Wooster

WOOSTER, Ohio – The Allegheny softball team continued North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) play at Wooster Wednesday (April 20).

Game One – Wooster 4, Allegheny 3

Paige Ziggas (Beaver, Pa./Beaver Area) led off the game with a double. Aleya Belardinelli (Melbourne, Fla./West Shore) followed up with a bunt single that ended up scoring Ziggas for the game's first run.

The Gators increased their lead in the third. Once again, Ziggas led off with a single and reached second on an error. Sofia Genareo (Lakewood, N.Y./Southwestern Central) tripled later in the inning to score Ziggas and make it 2-0.

The Fighting Scots scored a pair of runs in the third and one in the fourth to take a 3-2 lead.

In the sixth, Joplin Osgood (Coudersport, Pa./Coudersport) hit a two-out double and was brought home on a Sophia Godzak (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) RBI single, tying the game at three.

However, a Wooster solo home run in the sixth inning put them in front, and they sealed the win without allowing another Allegheny baserunner.

Ziggas and Belardinelli had two hits apiece to lead Allegheny. Belardinelli, Genareo and Godzak each had an RBI. Belardinelli, the starting pitcher, also struck out five batters.

Game Two – Wooster 12, Allegheny 3 (5 innings)

The Fighting Scots used a nine run fourth inning to pull away from the Gators. Ziggas hit a RBI single in the second inning while Hadley Horensky (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Seton LaSalle Catholic) drove in a run in the fourth. Olivia Devries (Kent, Ohio/Field) had a RBI single in the fifth.

Ziggas, Belardinelli and Osgood all had two hits apiece in the second game.

Allegheny is back in action Saturday (April 23) at Denison for a NCAC twinbill.
