Denison takes game one, rain suspends game two

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MEADVILLE, Pa. – Allegheny dropped game one of a North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) doubleheader against Denison before seeing game two suspended in the middle of the seventh inning.

Denison won game one 5-1, while the Big Red were leading by an 8-4 count in the nightcap before rain finally forced the two teams off the field.

In game one, the Big Red scored three runs in the top of the first, taking advantage of three Gator miscues. They tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the seventh inning.

Tyson Bryant-Dawson (Oakland, Calif./Manvel (Texas)) hit a two-out single in the bottom of the ninth. After moving up on a wild pitch, a Brett Heckert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) double brought Bryant-Dawson across the plate.

Conor Deasy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic) made the start on the mound for the Gators, striking out seven batters and allowing two earned runs in 6.2 innings of work.

Bryant-Dawson had a pair of hits to lead the Gators. Heckert had an RBI double while, Chase Chodkowski (Buffalo, N.Y./West Seneca West) and Ben Kosbie (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) also had hits.

Similar to game one, the Big Red scored first in the top of the first, plating one run. In the bottom of the frame, Jacob Budnar (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights) earned a walk. Heckert followed up with his second double of the day, moving Budnar to third. Bryant-Dawson brought Budnar home on a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 1-1.

Denison scored runs in each of the next four innings to grow its lead.

The Gators added one in the bottom of the fourth inning when Brady Nolin (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) scored on a Ryan Dougherty (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) single.

Allegheny added two more in the sixth inning. Matt Jennings (Birmingham, Mich./Brother Rice) drove in Heckert before Dougherty brought Bryant-Dawson home, cutting the lead to 8-4.

From there, the teams completed the top of the seventh in a pouring rain as play was halted as soon as the final out was recorded by Hunter Lohr (Bowdoinham, Maine/Mt. Ararat), who was on for 2.2 innings of scoreless relief of starter Daniel Morgano (Allison Park, Pa./Vincentian Academy).

Allegheny is set for a nonconference single game at Thiel beginning at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, April 12.
