Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Gators finish out Mount Union in closing seconds, 16-15

MEADVILLE, Pa. – A pair of goals with under two minutes remaining erased a one-goal deficit and gave the Allegheny women's lacrosse team a 16-15 win over Mount Union in nonconference action.

The victory is the first for the Gators against the Purple Raiders all-time, snapping a three-game losing streak against the squad from Alliance, Ohio, and improving the Blue & Gold to 5-0 to open the 2022 campaign

Grace Baginski (Lakeville, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) knotted the match at 15-15 with an unassisted goal at the 1:58-mark of the fourth quarter. Allegheny controlled the ensuing draw, but turned the ball over to Mount Union. A save by Sarah Thorman (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) with under a minute to go gave possession back to the Gators and a timeout allowed the home team to set up a play needing to go the full length of the field. The timeout paid off as Senna Perelman (Cleveland, Ohio/Cleveland Heights) completed the comeback with her third goal of the game – and fifth hat trick of the season – as the clock showed 23 seconds remaining.

A 4-1 advantage to start helped the Gators hold the lead for most of the match until the Raiders tied the score at 12-12 in the waning seconds of the third period. The score would be tied at 13-13, 14-14, and 15-15 until the decisive goal by Perelman was notched.

Baginski led all players with five goals, establishing a new career high in the process. Perelman and Lauren Petrarca (Simi Valley, Calif./Royal) both collected hat tricks in the victory. Maddie Miller (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) had a pair of goals and Ashley Amato (Westerly, R.I./Westerly), Mary Allen (Victory, N.Y./Victor) and Liz Dolan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Hampton) each added a tally of their own, while Devin Gaffney (Rochester, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) added three assists.

Defensively, Allen tied for the game high with five ground balls, equaling a career high she had accomplished twice before. The trio of Baginski, Petrarca and Molly Wojcik (Pittsburgh, Pa./Hampton) collected three ground balls apiece. Emily Herrold (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) was responsible for two of Allegheny's nine caused turnovers.

Thorman put up a new career-high save total, turning away Mount Union 17 times. She improved to 5-0 this year as the lone goalie to guard the cage thus far.

Allegheny will hit the road over Spring Break, traveling to Lexington, Ky. to take on Transylvania on Wednesday, March 23. Opening draw is scheduled for 7 p.m.
