Oberlin pulls away from Allegheny in fourth quarter

MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny women's basketball team fell at home against Oberlin, 63-46, in its penultimate North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) game of the regular season.

The Yeowomen led 9-4 early on, but a Breanna Warner (Hopewell, Pa./Sewickley Academy) fast break lay-up pulled the Gators within one, 9-8. However, a late Oberlin surge gave it a 13-10 lead at the end of one.

Midway through the second, the Gators pulled within one once again, 18-17. After an Oberlin basket, Emily Lauer (Knox, Pa./Keystone) hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 20 apiece. The Gators stopped Oberlin on the ensuing possession before Sydney Watko (Pomeroy, Wa./Pomeroy) put the Gators in front with a lay-up assisted by Jenna Manke (Freeport, Pa./Freeport). Oberlin added five points late in the half though to take a 25-22 lead into halftime.

The Gators got off to a quick start in the third quarter, taking the lead, 28-27, on a Manke basket three minutes in. After trading buckets back-and-forth, the Gators took their biggest lead of the evening, 36-32. Oberlin ended the quarter on a 7-2 run, however, as the Yeowomen took a 39-38 lead into the final frame.

Oberlin started the fourth quarter on a 9-0 run to pull ahead, 48-38, and secure the conference victory.

Lauer led the Gators with 14 points. Manke ended the game with 12 points and seven rebounds. Alexis Caldwell (Whitefish Bay, Wis./Whitefish Bay) tallied 10 points while leading the team with eight rebounds and three assists. Chloe Rabold (Baden, Pa./Ambridge) had seven rebounds whereas Warner finished with three blocks.

The Gators will close out the 2021-22 regular season, their final in the NCAC, with a 1 p.m. Senior Day match up against Denison at Mullen Arena.
