WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Allegheny women's basketball team fell on the road to Washington and Jefferson, 57-40, in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play Wednesday (Dec. 7).
The game started with some back-and-forth action as the Gators gained a 9-5 advantage. The Presidents answered with a 7-1 run to take the lead, 12-10. The Gators were able to tie it at 12, however, Washington and Jefferson scored the final four points of the quarter to take a 16-12 lead into the second. Allegheny cut the lead to one, 16-15, early in the second quarter, but the Presidents would follow up with a 9-0 run as they eventually led 27-17 at the half.
The Gators shrunk the lead down to 29-22 during the opening five minutes of the third quarter. With under five minutes to play in the frame,
Emily Lauer (Knox, Pa./Keystone) and
Sofia Genareo (Lakewood, N.Y./Southwestern Central) hit three pointers which brought the lead down to one, 31-30. A late basket gave Washington and Jefferson a 33-30 lead heading into the final quarter.
The Presidents pulled away in the fourth quarter as they outpaced the Gators 24-10 to seal the win.
Inside the Box
- Lauer led the Gators with 14 points and eight rebounds.
- Sarah Santicola (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) recorded an 11 point, 11 rebound double-double, her third of the season. She also blocked four shots for the fourth time this year.
- Genareo finished with seven points.
- Alexis Caldwell (Whitefish Bay, Wis./Whitefish Bay) had eight rebounds to go alongside five points.
- Kate Leach (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) grabbed six rebounds while Jess Bickart (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) had five.
