STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – The Allegheny women's basketball team outscored Franciscan 21-4 in the second quarter as they ultimately defeated the Barons 65-55 on the road Saturday (Nov. 19) in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play.
The Barons got off to a strong start as they gained a 13-2 advantage. The Gators would fight back late in the first quarter with an 8-1 run as the lead was cut to 14-10 heading into the second.
The momentum the Gators gained late in the first quarter carried over to the second in a big way. After Franciscan scored the first basket, the Gators went on a huge 17-0 run with six different Gators contributing points. The Gators played their best defense of any quarter this season, limiting the Barons to just four points in the frame as they took a 31-18 lead into the half. The 21 points by the Gators was their highest offensive output in any quarter this season.
Franciscan battled back in the third quarter, cutting the lead to six points multiple times. A late layup by
Emily Lauer (Knox, Pa./Keystone) gave Allegheny a 45-37 lead going into the final frame.
In the fourth, Franciscan continued to battle back, dropping the lead to four. However, a
Sofia Genareo (Lakewood, N.Y./Southwestern Central) three pointer pushed the lead to seven, 54-47. That three pointer sparked a 7-0 run which put the game out of reach for the Barons as the Gators won 65-55.
Inside the Box
- Lauer led the Gators with 19 points while also grabbing four rebounds.
- Genareo finished with a season-high 15 points with five rebounds and three assists.
- Jess Bickart (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
- Sarah Santicola (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) tied Bickart for the team lead with 10 rebounds while also tallying seven points, four blocks and three steals.
- Allegheny shot 41.4% (29-of-70) for the game.
- The Gators forced 24 turnovers which led to 21 points.

- The win marked the first win for the Gators in PAC competition.
