GRANVILLE, Ohio -- For just the second time this season, and for the first time in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) competition, the Allegheny College field hockey team suffered a defeat, as Denison University earned a 4-1 victory over the Gators on Sunday.
Denison (7-4, 2-1 NCAC), which reached the conference championship game last fall, snapped Allegheny's (10-2, 1-1 NCAC) six-game win streak thanks to an incredible individual effort from Madeleine Hunt. Hunt was responsible for all four goals scored by the Big Red. She helped the team get off to a quick start, as the senior midfielder had two goals in the first 5:03.
Leading 3-0 at the half, the Gators picked up the pace in the third quarter. After being held inside their defensive half of the field for much of the first half, Allegheny's attack was able to penetrate the Big Red defense on numerous occasions in the third. After a near-miss wide of the cage on their first penalty corner of the third quarter, the Gators made good on their second try. The ball was sent to the top of the arc, where
Becca Winton (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) rifled it towards the goal. Athena Joannou stopped Winton's initial shot, but was out of position when
Kelsey Anderson (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) shoveled in the rebound immediately after.
Down by two, the Allegheny offense continued to pressure Joannou by logging the two penalty corners and the five shots in the first five-plus minutes of the fourth quarter. Two of those shots came off the stick of
Emily Robles (Burlington Township, N.J./Burlington Township), as Joannou was forced to make five of her seven saves in the final quarter to preserve the lead.
