Field hockey drops OT game, but earn NCAC Tournament berth

MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny field hockey team fell at home in overtime, 2-1, to Wittenberg on senior day Saturday (Oct. 29), but were still able to earn the fourth seed in the upcoming North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Tournament.

This marks the first time the team has qualified for the tournament in just their fourth year as a program.

Before the game, the Gators honored their nine senior members: Heather Amancio (San Diego, Calif./Patrick Henry), Emma Anderson (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton), Kelsey Anderson (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton), Kinsley Greenlaw (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford), Hannah Sharp (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington), Ramsay Smith (Williamsburg, Va./LaFayette), Becca Winton (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle), Hanah Simmons (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) and Hallie Reiger (Oklahoma City, Okla./Casady).

In the third quarter, the Gators nearly broke the stalemate, but Maya Francisco's (Toledo, Ohio/Maumee Valley Country Day) shot hit off the post. In the closing minutes of the quarter, Wittenberg got on the board with a close range shot to take a 1-0 lead into the fourth quarter.

Early in the fourth, Kelsey Anderson got a shot past the goalie, but a Tiger defender stopped the attempt on the goal line. Minutes later, the offensive pressure paid off for the Gators. Off a corner, Jenna Cassani (Belgrade, Maine/Messalonskee) sent the ball back to Sharp who inserted the corner. Sharp then redirected it inside the post to tie the game at one.

Anderson had the first chance at scoring in overtime but her attempt went wide. Wittenberg then had a shot that Reiger turned away, but the Tigers earned a penalty corner. On the corner attempt, Wittenberg scored with a shot inside the near post to earn the overtime win.
