GREENCASTLE, Ind. -- Allegheny College's breakthrough 2022 campaign came to an end on Tuesday afternoon, as the fourth-seeded field hockey team fell in a close 2-1 battle against top-seeded DePauw University in the 2022 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Tournament semifinals.
Despite the loss, the Gators ended the year with a program-record 13 wins while making their first-ever playoff appearance, among numerous other accolades and achievements in just their third varsity season.
The first half was scoreless, but it didn't end without controversy. With just over two minutes remaining in the first quarter,
Kinsley Greenlaw (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) rocketed the ball toward the cage from outside the shooting circle. Although Greenlaw's hit came from the 23-meter line, the ball rolled through heavy traffic, but the officials ruled it was not deflected and, therefore, a null attempt.
Nine minutes after the Tigers (13-5) took a 1-0 lead, Allegheny responded to even the score.
Hannah Sharp (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) passed the ball to
Becca Winton (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) at the top of the circle. This time, Winton's shot - which also came from outside the shooting circle - was clearly deflected into the goal and evened the score at 1-1.
DePauw's Hailey Nowak displayed a strong individual effort to give her team the lead early in the fourth quarter. Nowak beat several defenders while dribbling along the baseline and drew
Hallie Reiger (Oklahoma City, Okla./Casady) out of position along the right post before releasing her shot toward the opening on the left side of the cage.
