Field Hockey Avenges Early-Season Loss Against Kenyon

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- Kenyon College may have won the first meeting between the Owls and Gators, but the Allegheny College field hockey team won the game that matters. Allegheny defeated Kenyon in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) action by a 3-2 final score on a cold and rainy Tuesday night at the Robertson Athletic Complex.

The Owls (7-7, 2-4 NCAC) halted AC's season-opening four-game win streak on their home turf in Gambier, Ohio, on September 11. But that was a non-conference contest, unlike Tuesday's game, which helped the Gators (12-3, 3-2 NCAC) climb into fourth place in the NCAC standings with three games left in the 2022 regular season.

Trailing 1-0 after a sixth-minute goal from Bella Kern, Allegheny responded with three unanswered from Bella Cowen (Louisville, Ky./Kentucky Day School), Emily Robles (Burlington Township, N.J./Burlington Township), and Ella O'Connor (Haddon Township, N.J./Haddon Township). Cowen's goal came in the final minute of the first quarter, while Robles found the back of the cage as time expired in the second quarter. In the 44th minute, the Gators pieced together a beautiful series of passes from Robles to Kelsey Anderson (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) to O'Connor, who was positioned directly in front of the goal. All she had to do was flick the ball inside the right post, as Kenyon's backup goalie, Payton Doan, was unable to slide across the mouth of the cage to make the stop.

The Owls got one back in the 49th minute, but the Hallie Reiger (Oklahoma City, Okla./Casady) preserved the one-goal lead by denying Kenyon on three shot attempts in the last six-and-a-half minutes.

Inside the Box Score
  • Allegheny took more shots (11-to-10), but Kenyon had more shots on goal (8-to-6).
  • The Gators received more than thrice as many penalty corners, 7-to-2.
  • Kern received two green cards, one which came immediately following Kenyon's third goal and allowed the Gators to shave valuable time off the clock with an extra player in the field.
  • Six different players had a point for Allegheny, with goals coming from Cowen, Robles, and O'Connor.
  • Twin sisters Kelsey and Emma Anderson (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) each had one assist, as did Kinsley Greenlaw (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford).
  • Reiger turned aside six shots, three of which came in the final seven minutes to protect a one-goal lead.

News and Notes
  • Tuesday's win was Allegheny's first-ever in four meetings with Kenyon.
  • Allegheny improved to 3-2 in NCAC play and sits fourth in the standings.
  • The Gators continued to protect their home turf and are now 7-0 this season at Robertson.
  • Emma Anderson earned the first point of her senior season with an assist against the Owls.
