Gators defeat Franciscan, remain undefeated in PAC

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – The Allegheny volleyball team won their seventh straight match, and moved to 4-0 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference, as they defeated Franciscan 3-1 (25-13, 17-25, 25-22, 25-23) on the road Thursday (Oct. 13).
 
The Gators opened up on a 6-0 run. The Barons fought back to bring the set within three, 12-9. However, Allegheny strung together another big run, this time 8-0, as they closed out the opening set on a Sydney Kirk (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton LaSalle Catholic) kill.
 
Franciscan had the early advantage in the second set, 11-6. The Gators bounced back to pull within one, 15-14, but was unable to overcome the early deficit as Franciscan tied the match with a 25-17 set win.
 
Once again, the Barons gained an early advantage in the third set. Allegheny fought back to tie the game multiple times. Knotted at 17, the Barons scored the next three points. After a timeout, the Gators rattled off a 5-1 run to move ahead, 22-21. Mila Anderson (San Diego, Calif./Mission Bay) won the set point with a kill as the Gators took a 2-1 lead with a 25-22 set win.
 
The teams were even in the early portions of the fourth set, but a 5-0 run gave Allegheny a 15-10 lead. Franciscan would battle back and regain the lead at 23-22, leading to an Allegheny timeout. Coming out of the timeout, the Gators won the final three points, capped off on a Cheyenne Wilson (Chico, Calif./Pleasant Valley) kil,l as the Gators won in four sets.
 
Inside the Box
  • India McCruter (Columbus, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson), the two-time reigning PAC Defensive Player of the Week, led the Gators with season highs in kills and blocks with 11 each.
  • Wilson finished the game with eight kills and nine digs.
  • Meagan Robare (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) and Izzy Gray (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) had 16 and 15 assists, respectively.
  • Jacy Diaz (Barranquitas, Puerto Rico/Gallatin (Tenn.)) led the Gators with 18 digs.
  • Cetta Panza (Pittsburgh, Pa./Vincentian Academy) and Gray also had nine digs.
  • Emma Chambers (Stoutsville, Ohio/Amanda Clearcreek) added five blocks while Anderson had four.
  • Dagney Javes (Frederick, Colo./Dawson School) and Gray had two aces apiece.
 
News and Notes
  • With the victory, the Gators are now 14-8 on the season and 4-0 in PAC action.
  • The Gators are now 3-1 all-time against Franciscan.
