MEADVILLE, Pa. -- Despite a late flurry of high-quality scoring chances in the final moments of Wednesday's Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup against Grove City College, the Allegheny College women's soccer team suffered a 1-0 setback on the blue turf at the Robertson Athletic Complex.
The Wolverines (6-6-1, 3-2-1 PAC) controlled possession for much of the evening, as evidenced by a 29-to-9 advantage in total shots. Although Grove City's strikers pressured the Allegheny (3-7-3, 2-3-1 PAC) defense, the Gators met the challenge admirably with a bend-but-don't-break style of play.
The only goal of the contest, which Megan Mathes scored for the Wolverines in the 58th minute, was a preventable one. The shot was initially stopped by goalkeeper
Kari May (Erie, Pa./McDowell) but could not be controlled before rolling into the net. Other than that one miscue, May, with help on the back line from
Katie Reed (Annapolis, Md./Arundel),
Autumn Wittebort (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour),
Elle Carpenter (Waco, Texas/Midway), and
Emma Milligan (Parkesburg, Pa./Octorara), nullified Grove City's high-volume offense.
The best offensive chances for the Gators developed in the final minutes. Racing against the clock, Allegheny logged five shots in the last four-plus minutes, three of which came off the foot of
Emma Miller (Elyria, Ohio/Lake Ridge Academy). With 4:05 left in regulation,
Lilly Noel (Shepherdstown, W.Va./St. James) connected with Miller on a perfectly-place through ball past a host of Grove City defenders. The pass put Miller in a one-on-one situation with Courtney Lisman, but the GCC keeper was in position for the crucial save.
With seconds to go, a throw-in by Miller was cleared out of the box and back to her feet near the left sideline. From there, she ripped a right-footed shot toward the upper 90 for what nearly resulted in the tying goal. The ball barely deflected off Lisman's hands before caroming off the post as the clock neared zero.
