Volleyball wins PAC opener in straight sets

MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny volleyball team opened Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-11, 25-16) win against Waynesburg at home Saturday (Oct. 1).
 
Cheyenne Wilson (Chico, Calif./Pleasant Valley) gave the Gators an early 10-4 edge with three straight aces in the opening set. The rest of the set remained competitive. The Gators rattled off three straight points to earn a set point at 24-17, capitalizing with a block by India McCruter (Columbus, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) and Kendall Crum (Chattanooga, Tenn./Girls Preparatory) to win the set 25-17.
 
In the second set, the Gators jumped out to a 7-0 lead before a Waynesburg timeout behind Meagan Robare's (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) serves. The lead grew to 12-0 before Waynesburg got on the board. Allegheny won the set 25-11 to take a 2-0 match lead.
 
The third set started with back-and-forth action, as Waynesburg owned a 12-11 lead. Following a timeout, the Gators went on a 5-1 run to gain a 16-12 advantage. The Gators maintained that lead the rest of the way as they sealed the PAC win with a 25-16 third set win.
 
Inside the Box
  • Emma Chambers (Stoutsville, Ohio/Amanda Clearcreek) and Crum led the Gators with nine kills apiece.
  • Wilson added seven kills, seven digs and four aces.
  • McCruter led the Gators with nine blocks while Crum had eight.
  • Diaz had a game-high 26 digs in addition to three aces.
  • Robare led the team with 19 assists while also tallying 10 digs.
 
New and Notes
  • The Gators improved to 11-8, 1-0 PAC on the season.
  • Allegheny leads the all-time series with Waynesburg 15-8.
  • The 14 total blocks by the Gators were a season-high.
  • This marks the fourth straight sweep for Allegheny.
