WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Allegheny College volleyball team earned its fifth consecutive victory on Wednesday night, as the Gators took down Washington and Jefferson College in four sets in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) showdown inside W&J's Salvitti Family Gymnasium.
The Gators (12-8, 2-0 PAC) rolled the Presidents (8-6, 0-2 PAC) in the first two sets, winning by scores of 25-10 and 25-16 for the early lead. Allegheny held Washington and Jefferson to a negative hitting percentage in both sets, while attacking at a rate of .286. Building a wall at the net played a big factor for the Gators, who logged 12 total blocks and finished just two shy of a single-match season high.
The first two points of the match were both won via solo blocks by
Emma Chambers (Stoutsville, Ohio/Amanda Clearcreek) and
Kendall Crum (Chattanooga, Tenn./Girls Preparatory), which helped set the tone for the remainder of the evening.
W&J was able to take the third set from AC, as the Presidents broke a 20-20 tie with five unanswered points to conclude the third. The Presidents carried the momentum over to the fourth set by winning seven of the first 10 points. However, trailing 11-6, Chambers started a 7-0 rally with two kills and a block. Just like the third, the fourth set ended up tied at 20-20, but Chambers floored kills for three of Allegheny's last five points to close out the victory.
