Granville, Ohio -- The Allegheny's women's basketball team was defeated 69-44 by Denison on Tuesday (Jan. 18) in a North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) matchup.
Allegheny did not miss a beat in its first game since Dec. 20 as the Gators opened up the first quarter with a 13-11 lead. Originally down 11-8,
Alexis Caldwell (Whitefish Bay, Wis./Whitefish Bay) and
Emily Lauer (Knox, Pa./Keystone) sparked a five point run. Caldwell pulled up with a two-point jumper and ended the frame by initiating a deceptive assist to Lauer who cashed in on a three-point play.
Overall, Lauer netted 20 points to finish the game with her fourth 20-plus point game of the season and was the only Gator to reach double-digits. Meanwhile, Caldwell paced the Gators with three assists.
However, Denison outscored Allegheny 15-2 to start the second quarter as the Gators lost the turnover game six to four. The Gators trailed 30-23 during halftime, but the defense showed life as
Tully Taylor (Conneaut, Ohio/Conneaut) and
Gabby Culotta (Willoughby, Ohio/Andrews Osborne Academy) each delivered a block in the third quarter. Additionally,
Sydney Watko (Pomeroy, Wash./Pomeroy) added two defensive rebounds, and ended the contest with a game-high nine boards on the day.
Allegheny continues its road trip at Oberlin on Wednesday, Jan. 19. The two NCAC rivals tip-off at 6 p.m.
