Gators win five set thriller against Oberlin

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Allegheny volleyball team went to five sets against North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) foe Oberlin, prevailing in the final set to give the Gators the conference victory Wednesday (Sept. 29).

The win brings the Gators' record up to 11-4, 1-2 NCAC for the season.

During the fourth set, Olivia D'Andrea (Pittsburgh, Pa./Serra Catholic) tallied her 1,000th career assist.

After trading the first two sets, the Gators started the fifth set on a 5-0 run, fueled by India McCruter (Columbus, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) and Kendall Crum (Chattanooga, Tenn./Girls Preparatory) blocks on the first two points.  After exchanging points, the Gators went on a 3-0 run to pull ahead 12-4.  Leading 14-7, a Crum kill sealed the win for the Gators.

Emma Chambers (Stoutsville, Ohio/Amanda Clearcreek) led the Gator attack with 15 kills.  Cheyenne Wilson (Chico, Calif./Pleasant Valley) was also in double-digits with 13 kills.  Crum finished with eight while Dagney Javes (Frederick, Colo./Dawson School) had five.  D'Andrea and Meagan Robare (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) had 20 assists apiece.  Robare and Taylor Besch (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) had two aces apiece.

Defensively, Besch led the Gators with 16 digs.  She was one of four Gators in double digits.  Kate Christie (Schenectady, N.Y./Niskayuna) was just behind Besch with 15 digs while Wilson had 14 and D'Andrea had ten.

The Gators totaled 14 blocks.  McCruter had nine blocks, while Crum had three.

The win marked the first regular season NCAC victory for the Gators since a 3-2 victory against Oberlin on October 21, 2015.

Allegheny will host another NCAC match this weekend, Saturday, Oct. 2, at 1 pm when Kenyon makes the trip to Mullen Arena.
