Defense shines in 3-0 win against Oberlin

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- Allegheny ran its winning streak to three with a 3-0 nonconference shutout against Oberlin on the Robertson Blue Turf.

After a scoreless first period, the Gators lit the scoreboard after 9:13 had elapsed in the second quarter. Kelsey Anderson (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) buried a goal on a redirect off a shot from the stick of Becca Winton (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle). The 1-0 score would hold through halftime. Midway through the third quarter, Bella Cowen (Louisville, Ky./Kentucky Day School) poured in her team-leading fourth goal of the season after receiving a pass from Ella O'Connor (Haddon Township, N.J./Haddon Township) to stretch the margin to 2-0. Cowen finished out the scoring with her second goal of the day with 1:31 to play in the match off an assist by Debbie Nalesnik (Milford, N.J./Delaware Valley Regional).

Cowen registered half of Allegheny's 16 shots to lead the team, O'Connor was second with three and Kelsey Anderson and Ramsay Smith (Williamsburg, Va./Lafayette) both posted two. The defense was suffocating all evening, allowing the Yeo to zero shots.

Meredythe Baird (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Holy Redeemer) earned her first career win in her first collegiate start, covering the cage for the first three quarters. Heather Amancio (San Diego, Calif./Patrick Henry) closed out play with a clean fourth quarter.

Allegheny will officially open up North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) play on Saturday, Oct. 2 with a noon start in Gambier, Ohio at Kenyon.
