Gators post highest offensive output since 1990 in 9-1 win

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Allegheny had a pair of multiple goal scorers, and eight Gators recorded at least one point as the Blue & Gold went on the road to roll past La Roche, 9-1, in nonconference action.

The victory gives the Gators a consecutive victory and moves Allegheny to 3-2 overall this year. The nine goals mark the highest offensive output in a single match of the tenure of head coach Angelo Panzetta, who is in his 21st season at the helm. Nine goals marks the highest total since the 1990 season finale when Allegheny toppled Pitt-Bradford by a 10-3 count.

After a La Roche goal in the 13th minute, Alex Riel (Bethesda, Md./Landon) scored a pair of goals off his own corner kick seven minutes apart to give the Gators the lead for good. Later in the half, Shane Lisman (Mars, Pa./Mars) headed in a Cliff Weaver (SIlver Spring, Md./Albert Einstein) corner to extend the margin to 3-1. Just two minutes later, Weaver scored a goal of his own off a pass from Cam Kaminski (Bowling Green, Ohio.Maumee Valley Country Day) for the Gators' fourth goal. The 4-1 advantage held up at the break, with the visitors holding the lead at halftime.

Darius Googe (East Hartford, Conn./East Hartford) scored the fifth Gator goal off a through pass by Colin Elder (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) in the 73rd minute, part of five Allegheny goals down the stretch to set the final total. After Googe's goal, Ryan Hilty (Jeannette, Pa./Penn-Trafford) posted a natural hat trick, needing less than 10 minutes total. His first goal was unassisted as he buried a loose ball in the box, but his final two tallies were aided by Kaminski and Weaver, respectively. The final score was set when Keegan Cassidy (Commack, N.Y./Commack) fired in a penalty kick with about 40 seconds to play in the match.

Jack Barron-Sluga (Guelph, Ont./Appleby College) got the win in net, making a pair of saves in a hair over 60 minutes of action. Gabe Anthony (Tarentum, Pa./Highlands) completed the match, turning away the only shot on goal he faced in his debut.

Allegheny will return to the new grass field at the Robertson Athletic Complex where it is 2-0 this season for a nonconference match against SUNY Fredonia at 2:30 pm on Saturday, Sept. 18.
