Miller’s OT blast gives Gators and Phillips first wins

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Emma Miller (Elyria, Ohio/Lake Ridge Academy) hit a left-footed blast from approximately 30 yards out in overtime to give the Gators their first women's soccer win of the season, a 2-1 triumph at Washington & Jefferson.

Miller's goal was set up when Autumn Wittebort (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) won a 50/50 ball near midfield and played the pass ahead to Miller, who made a quick dodge to the inside with her back to the defender and then spun to the outside and hit her game-winner over the outstretched arms of the Presidents' keeper, just under the crossbar.

The victory marks the first for the Allegheny women's soccer team this year, and the inaugural triumph in the career of first-year head coach Lacey Phillips.

After a scoreless first half, the Presidents struck in the 55th minute to gain the lead. Just six minutes later, Natasha Rosa (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) knotted it up at 1-1 with an unassisted strike to the top left corner. The goal marked her second of the season, matching Miller for the team lead.

Allegheny held a slim advantage on shots at 9-8, and doubled up W&J in shots on goal at 6-3. Emily Orr (Coraopolis, Pa./Moon Area) joined Rosa as the only Gators to record multiple shots as each tallied two.

Kaitlynn Rees (Anaheim, Calif./Fullerton Union) picked up her first career win in goal for the Gators, making two saves, including one in overtime.

The Gators return home to the Robertson Blue Turf when they host Case Western Reserve at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 18.
