Gators battle with Fighting Scots

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- Wooster used a 5-1 run that began later in the third quarter to hand the Allegheny men's lacrosse team a 15-11 nonconference defeat at Frank B. Fuhrer Field.

A goal by Aidan D'Amato (Tolland, Conn./Tolland) at the 6:25-mark of the third quarter made it a 9-9 game, before the Scots went on their run beginning with a goal at 1:22 of the third and concluding with a goal at 4:49 of the fourth quarter that made the score 14-10. The lone goal by the Gators during the spurt was an Aidan Keenan (Erie, Pa./McDowell), which stopped a 4-0 run at 6:54, 13-10.

Allegheny trailed, 5-2, after one period, with Zackery Devers (Kapolei, Hawaii/Kapolei) and Patrick Hogan (London, Ontario/St. Andre Bessett) finding the back of the cage. A 5-3 advantage in the second quarter, including the final three scores, brought the Gators within one at halftime, 8-7. Four of the five scores were man-up as Allegheny took advantage of seven Wooster penalties in the frame.

The Gators struck first in the second half as Brennan Dugan (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) finished off a feed from Hogan, 8-8. Wooster took the lead back at 7:24, but Aidan D'Amato knotted the scoreboard at 9-9 before the decisive run.

Hogan tied for the game high with seven points (two goals, five assists), while Aidan D'Amato (three points, two goals), Keenan (two goals), Dugan (two goals) and Devers (two points, one goal) had multi-point performances.

Defensively, Dillon D'Amato and David Kraus (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) forced a pair of turnovers apiece, while Kraus and Pete Schellbach (New York, N.Y./Salisbury School) paced the Gators with four ground balls each.

Eric Mirkovich (York, Pa./York Central) made 13 saves between the pipes.

As a team, the Gators secured 30 ground balls, went 17-of-23 on clears and hit on 5-of-7 extra-man opportunities.

Allegheny and Wooster will conclude their season series on Saturday, May 1 at 4 p.m. in Wooster, Ohio.
