Softball sweeps Kenyon on Senior Day

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- Allegheny completed its weekend sweep of Kenyon and added two more North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) wins at home on Saturday by scores of 9-4 and 5-4.

During the matinee, the Gators scored 8 of their 9 runs in the bottom of the second inning to power the game one win.  Delaney Harrison-Peters (Silver Spring, Md./Walter Johnson) got the scoring started by virtue of a two-RBI single in to right field that scored Isabelle Wakefield (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek)  and Kyleigh Cason (Virginia Beach, Va./Floyd E Kellam) to open a 2-0 lead.

As Allegheny added three more runs while batting around in the inning, Wakefield took advantage of her second time up and placed a single back up the middle that scored Joplin Osgood (Coudersport, Pa./Coudersport) and Cameron Long (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) to push the Gator lead to 7-0. Hadley Horensky (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Seton LaSalle Catholic) capped off the offensive onslaught with a single through the left side of the field that brought Cason home from third.

Cason recorded her second home run in as many days in the bottom of the sixth inning with a hit over the left field fence. She also led the Gators offensively with a perfect 3-for-3 and walk. Horensky, Long, Osgood and Wakefield all chipped in with multi-hit games. Wakefield along with Harrison-Peters drove in a team-high two runs each.

Tori Vradenburg (Pasadena, Calif./San Marino) earned her second win of the season during the first game. In a complete-game effort, she only surrendered four hits and four runs. Of her 10 strikeouts, she got eight batters swinging while catching the other two looking.

In the night cap, Kelly Lafferty (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond River) stepped up to the plate in the bottom of the sixth inning with the bases loaded and Allegheny down 4-2. On a pitch to hit, she belted a double into left field and brought everyone home to take the lead 5-4 which secured the weekend sweep for the Gators.

Lafferty and Wakefield led the offensive effort with a game-best three hits apiece.

Vradenburg picked up her second win of the afternoon, only giving up one hit and not allowing another run to score.

Allegheny will return to action on Tuesday with a nonconference doubleheader against Carnegie Mellon. First pitch from the Robertson Athletic Complex is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
