MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Allegheny baseball team celebrated its seniors prior to a nonconference doubleheader split against Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon.
The Gators were victorious in the opener by a 6-2 count, before dropping the night cap in nine innings, 7-3.
In the opening victory,
Daniel Morgano (Allison Park, Pa./Vincentian Academy) struck out 10 in 6.0 innings of work in improving to 2-0 on the season. The sophomore scattered four hits and three walks and surrendered just one run, which was unearned.
Brent Herrmann (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) earned his first save by getting the final out of the game, a foul out to third base on his fourth pitch.
Leading 1-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth, the Gators stuck for three runs on a wild pitch that brought in
Ryan Dougherty (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny), an RBI infield single by
Chase Chodkowski (Buffalo, N.Y./West Seneca West) and a sacrifice fly by
Brett Heckert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny).
After OWU got on the board in the top of the sixth with a run, Dougherty hit his first collegiate home run in the bottom of the inning to provide a pair of insurance runs for the Gators, 6-1.
Brayden Cartwright (New Castle, Pa./New Castle) had the lone multi-hit showing in the opener, while
Roman Santia (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) added a double.
Game two saw a two-run homer in the bottom of the second by
Tyler Hettich (Sarver, Pa./Freeport) give Allegheny a 2-1 lead and then a pinch-hit sacrifice fly by
Jack Duffek (Buffalo, N.Y./Orchard Park) tie the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth. Duffek's sac fly would mark the final run of the game until Ohio Wesleyan was able to plate four in the top of the ninth for the final margin.
Nick Tarasi (Gibsonia, Pa./Shady Side Academy) received a no-decision in the nightcap after working the first 7.0 innings in his first start of the season, and just the second of his career. The senior struck out five and yielded six hits and three earned runs in the outing.
The two teams are scheduled for a doubleheader in Delaware, Ohio beginning at 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 25.
