MEADVILLE, Pa. --
Conor Deasy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic) tossed a shutout in game one, and the Gators pounded out 15 hits in game two, as Allegheny returned to its winning ways by sweeping a North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) doubleheader with Hiram by scores of 2-0 and 10-2.
Deasy's first career shutout featured a career-high eight strikeouts, with two hits and two walks scattered throughout. Of his eight strikeouts, Deasy caught four batters looking, including the first and last hitters of the game. The sophomore was efficient all day, retiring the Terriers in order in four of seven innings and not allowing a runner to reach third base. The shutout marked the first for Allegheny's pitching staff since an 11-0 NCAC win against Kenyon on May 2, 2018, and the first time one hurler completed the task himself since Chase Boyer struck out 10 in a 6-0 conference victory over Hiram on April 16, 2016.
The Gators got on the board in the bottom of the second inning for what proved to be the only run Deasy would need.
Jake Stotsky (Pittsburgh, Pa./Vincentian Academy) led off with a walk and, with two outs, stole second before trotting to third on a throwing error by the catcher before coming in to score when
Jacob Budnar (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights) reached on a fielding error in the infield.
Allegheny's insurance run came in the bottom of the fourth.
Brett Heckert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) led off with a single and moved to third on a base hit by Stotsky before coming home on a one-out sacrifice fly by
Dalton DuBois (Bemus Point, N.Y./Maple Grove).
The first three batters in the lineup in game two did the bulk of the damage, as
Chase Chodkowski (Buffalo, N.Y./West Seneca West),
Luke Chutko (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) and Heckert combined to go 9-for-10 with eight RBI. Also in the night cap,
Jonathan Sharp (Chardon, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) belted the first home run of his career when he led off the fourth inning with a line drive over the left-field fence.
The Gators spread their 10 runs out over four frames, plating one in the bottom of the first and then two in the third, three in the fourth and four in the fifth.
Nolan Thompson (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) picked up his first win of the season, working the first 4.2 innings, allowing just two hits and two runs and striking out five.
Allegheny (6-3, 3-3 NCAC) and Hiram (7-19, 2-8 NCAC) are scheduled to play four games this coming weekend, with a doubleheader at Hiram on Saturday, April 17 serving as the conclusion of the four-game NCAC set between the two teams, and a double dip back in Meadville on Sunday, April 18 which will not count toward the league standings.
