Gators open 2021 campaign with 16-6 win at Fredonia

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- In its return to action for the first time since March 7, 2020, the Allegheny women's lacrosse team posted a commanding 16-6 road win at Fredonia.

After more than a year between games due to COVID-19 cutting short the 2020 season and pushing back the start of the 2021 campaign, the Gators broke open a 2-2 game early with five-straight goals to earn a 7-3 lead after 30 minutes of play. The Blue Devils cut the margin to 7-5 within the first five minutes of the second half, but Allegheny asserted itself to the tune of nine consecutive scores before Fredonia added a final tally with just over one minute to play to end up at the 16-6 final.

Senna Perelman (Cleveland, Ohio/Cleveland Heights) led all players with both six points and four goals, both career highs, and the second hat trick of the sophomore's career. Evi Malagise (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) was second on the team with three goals and four points, marking the 10th career hat trick for the senior. Grace Baginski (Lakeville, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) (three points) and Mary Allen (Victor, N.Y./Victor) each turned in a pair of goals on the day, and five different Gators added one goal each.

Gretchen Barbera (Yarmouth, Maine/Yarmouth) led the Gator defensive corps with seven ground balls while causing five turnovers. Seven other Gators caused at least a pair of turnovers apiece, including Brenna Lawler's (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) three ground balls.

Starter Fiona Barrett (Danvers, Mass./Danvers) picked up the win in net, making eight saves on the day.

Allegheny is scheduled to open up North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) play on Tuesday, March 30, when it travels to Gambier, Ohio for a 4 p.m. match at Kenyon. The Ladies will then return the trip on Saturday, April 3, when the two squads meet up at 1 p.m. in Meadville.
