MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Allegheny Men's Basketball team honored its seniors with a pregame ceremony and a 108-81 exhibition win over Penn State-Altoona in the first varsity intercollegiate competition on the campus in more than 12 months.
The traditional 2020-21 men's basketball season was not completed as scheduled due to COVID-19 protocols. However, due to the diligence of the Allegheny student body, student-athletes, administration, faculty, staff and improved conditions nationwide, the Allegheny College Health Agency (ACHA) approved a limited number of exhibition contests for the Gators' winter sports teams to be able to compete during the spring semester, while the spring sports teams were preparing for traditional seasons.
Jordan Greynolds (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton) hit a three-pointer with 18:28 left to play in the first half to give the Gators a 5-3 lead and they did not trail for the remainder of the game.
With five Gators tallying double-digit point totals,
Brian Roberts, Jr. (Copley, Ohio/Copley) led all scorers with 23 points. He did so by shooting 8-of-15 from the field, knocking down five of those shots from beyond the three-point line. Roberts, Jr. made sure that the rest of the team got in on the action with a game-best seven assists.
As the game's second leading scorer, Greynolds recorded 21 points on 6-of-10 shooting, including five three-pointers. He also grabbed seven boards and handed out three assists.
Holden Phillips (Broadlands, Va./Briar Wood) chipped in with 14 points and four rebounds.
Mike Noonan (Latrobe, Pa./Latrobe) recorded a double-double in his first collegiate action with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Seniors
Lamar Todd (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) and
Nijon Kirkman (Cleveland, Ohio/John Hay) also contributed to the win. Todd's night ended with 10 points, five rebounds, four assists and a steal. Kirkman hauled in 11 boards, recorded nine points and two assists.
Allegheny will play its second of back-to-back exhibitions against Penn State-Altoona on Saturday March 20. Tip-off from the James H. Mullen, Jr. Arena is scheduled for 5 p.m. Live coverage can be found on the men's basketball schedule on alleghenygators.com.
