MEADVILLE, Pa. -- A 26-4 run to close out the first half propelled the Allegheny men's basketball team to a 17-point halftime lead and a subsequent 86-66 win against Penn State Altoona.
The meeting was the second exhibition match up in as many evenings between the two squads, as the NCAA has granted a one-year exemption for teams to play games outside of the traditional playing season to compensate for missed time due to COVID-19 protocols.
The 26-4 run encapsulated the final 6:36 of the first half and saw the Gators make six three-pointers (6-of-11) and 10 field goals.
Peter Snipes (Upper Marlboro, Md./Dr. Henry A. Wise, Jr.) put in seven points during the spurt, while
Andre Wilder (Beaver Falls, Pa./Lincoln Park) added six points on a pair of triples, and
Lamar Todd (Pittsburgh, Pa./Allderdice) and
Brock Brumfield (Medina, Ohio/Buckeye) each chipped in five points.
Brian Roberts, Jr. (Copley, Ohio/Copley) added a three-pointer of his own in the run. Also over the spurt, the home team held Penn State Altoona to just 1-of-12 shooting and 0-of-5 from beyond-the-arc.
Roberts, Jr. led all players in scoring for a second straight game, putting up 21 points, while also dishing out a game-best six assists. Snipes shot 9-of-15 from the floor en route to a career-best 19 points, while Todd notched a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Wilder reached double digits for the first time in his collegiate career, knocking down all three of his shots from beyond-the-arc to put up 13 points, plus five boards.
Jordan Greynolds (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton) and
Nijon Kirkman (Cleveland, Ohio/John Hay) registered nine and eight rebounds, respectively, to lead Allegheny to a 56-40 advantage on the glass.
The Gators are set to return to the court at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 26 when they host Mount Aloysius for the first of two games against the Mounties at James H. Mullen, Jr. Arena. The second exhibition contest between the squads will tip off in Meadville at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 28.
